As we move into the age of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), more emphasis is placed on the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). At Bowman School, we believe that STEM is good, but science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) is better. Every discipline involved in STEAM programs is geared toward encouraging learning across all disciplines, promoting student inquiry, and engaging students in real-world problem solving.
At Bowman, we believe all students are naturally curious and eager for constructive and dramatic play, but in order to start thinking like scientists and engineers, they must be taught to apply their predispositions. By providing students many opportunities to develop and practice their skills, we support them in becoming truly successful in many areas.

Using Montessori methodologies as the foundation, Bowman is developing a unique STEAM program aimed at constructing environments for building exploration and scientific discovery. We are near completion of our IDEA Lab where students will be free to discover and observe plants and animals, take apart various machines, tinker, build, invent, and let their curiosity and persistence drive their explorations. Communication is a critical aspect for STEAM disciplines, and students will be motivated to share their observations, discoveries, and ideas with each other via written, verbal, and artistic methods.
Our technology focus in the STEAM lab will be using the proper tool for the job, rather than just learning how to use an electronic device. The basis for technology in Bowman’s STEAM program will be problem solving and developing quick and cost-effective solutions on the go.
Bowman’s new IDEA Lab, combined with the natural curiosity and persistence of our students, will create a dynamic environment that energizes and inspires us all.
